The passing and taking into effect of decree 289/2002 of December 10, 2002, by which the Union of Basque Sport Federations is governed, represents a great move forward in the structure and regulation of Basque federated sport.

Time has passed since Basque Sport Law 14/98, in chapter VI, article 36, stipulated the creation of a Union of Basque Sport Federations with legal character and full legal capacity to act, as the representative organization of the group of Basque sport federations with the firm purpose of establishing common positions for the improvement and development of Basque federated sport, the defense and better accomplishment of its sport objectives, the creation of common administrative and technical support structures of Basque sport federations, as well as the evaluation of the Sport Administration and the necessary support to the Basque sport federations so that they can promote and advance the participation of Basque teams in national and international competitions.
